Lazovic began his career with local club FK Radnicki Kragujevac. He then moved to Partizan Belgrade and had three successful seasons in which he appeared 60 times for the club, scoring 20 goals in the process. His form prompted Dutch team Feyenoord to sign him  for €7 million in the 2003. However, he could not find his way into the starting lineup and was loaned out to Bayer Leverkusen in 2005.

He struggled to make an impact there as well and was loaned to Partizan in January 2006. After a decent half season, he was signed by Eredivisie side Vitesse in 2006 for €1.5 million. This is where his career took off, as he had a brilliant season and was contending for the League's golden boot. Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven took notice of his form and signed him after the season got over for a fee of €6.6 million.

Lazovic opted for the number 9 jersey which was worn by Dutch legend Patrick Kluivert. His performances with PSV were decent if not outstanding, but he was sold to Zenit St. Petersburg for €5 million in March 2010.
