After rumours regarding a move to England, and speculation that he would return to old club Racing Santander on loan, Zigic finally stayed on and vowed to fight for a starting spot in Valencia in the 2008-09 season.

Zigic was eventually loaned out to former club Racing Santander during the winter transfer window. On January 4, 2009, in his debut match in his second spell for the Cantabrians, Zigic scored the winner, which was the game’s only goal against Real Valladolid, repeating the same in a win over Getafe CF, two match days later, and repeated the same away at Sevilla FC on January 25, 2009. He finished his second stint with the club with 13 goals in 19 games and then returned to Valencia.

He caught the eye of various clubs across Europe during his time with the Red Star Belgrade in the Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina league, and only found a starting place in the national team under coach Ilija Petković. He scored in a few friendlies for his team, but it was the substitute appearance at a crucial World Cup qualification game against Spain in Madrid during September 2005 that brought him into the international limelight.

After a bizarre first-half display at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, in which Serbia-Montenegro rarely ventured into the opponents half, only being 1–0 down, coach Petkovic threw Zigic into the mix, and his towering presence changed the course of the entire match. However, Serbia won the key away point and confirmed their place in the World Cup at home in Belgrade versus Bosnia-Herzegovina, with Zigic setting up the assist for Kezman’s for the game's only goal.
