Pepe - Kleper Laveran Lima Ferreira was born and raised in Maceio, Brazil and moved to Portugal to join Maratimo as an 18-year-old in 2001. It wasn’t long before Pepe broke into The Lions first-team where he showed his versatility, playing in a number of positions including an advanced midfield role.

His dynamic performances quickly caught the attentions of the county’s biggest clubs and Pepe joined FC Porto in 2004 in a transfer that saw Maratimo receive a cash sum plus three players. The Brazilian quickly became a mainstay at the centre of the Porto defence and was an essential part of Dragoes 2006 double-winning team, carving out a reputation as one of the top defenders in Europe outside of the continent’s three biggest leagues.

Like so many FC Porto stars, it seemed only matter of time before the Brazilian made a big-money move to one of Europe’s heavy-hitters and in 2007, Real Madrid came knocking. Los Blancos paid in excess of €30 million for his signature and while it was a fee that raised a number of eyebrows around Europe, Pepe’s performances in Madrid quickly justified the hefty sum paid by then president Ramon Calderon.

By the time he left Porto, Pepe had spent six years in Portugal and shortly after making the move to La Liga, received his Portuguese passport. Having never represented Brazil at any level, the big defender declared his allegiance to his adopted homeland and made his International debut for Portugal as part of the Euro 2008 qualification campaign.

Portugal struggled through qualification for South Africa 2010 and many attribute their dramatic turn-around to Carlos Queiroz’ decision to deploy Pepe as a holding midfielder, an inspired move that saw Portugal concede just two goals in their final ten qualifiers.

He was originally named Pepinho (meaning ‘little Pep’) until a coach told him he was too tall for the name and rechristened him Pepe.
