Joris Mathijsen has quite often been criticised for his performances in the Dutch national team, in which Jaap Stam and Frank de Boer had been kings of the defence for many years. However, Mathijsen, one of the pillars of German side Hamburger SV, has now been accepted as the left footed central defender of Oranje.

Being a local guy Mathijsen came through the youth ranks of Willem II and stayed in Tilburg until the summer of 2004 after having made his debut in February 1999. His transfer to AZ meant the real breakthrough for Mathijsen, who played his first game for the Dutch national team in his first year at AZ. Being part of a spectacular team, Mathijsen and AZ almost got to the UEFA Cup final. Because of an injury the defender missed the dramatic semi-final against Sporting.

World Cup 2006 meant his first appearances on a big stage. His adventure in Germany would continue after the tournament. HSV signed Mathijsen, who would develop in a key player at Hamburg. The defender hardly misses a game in the Bundesliga and has collected 52 caps so far.

Did you know that:

Joris Mathijsen has played under the helm of coach Co Adriaanse at Willem II and AZ?
