In-demand Hamburger SV star Nigel De Jong, in action for The Netherlands (PA)
Nigel de Jong is again an example of the excellent youth academy of Ajax. Making his debut in the 2002/2003 season under the reign of Ronald Koeman, De Jong immediately experienced a highlight in his career by scoring the equaliser at Highbury in a Champions League game against Arsenal.

De Jong was used at various positions in defence and midfield during his time in Amsterdam. When Hamburger SV signed him in the winter break of the 2005/2006 season, De Jong started to establish himself as a battling defensive midfielder. It was Manchester City that paid the sum of €19.5 million for the Dutchman half way through last season, making De Jong one of the most expensive players to ever leave the Bundeliga.

His aggressive way of playing makes him a hard man to handle for opponents. When playing, De Jong holds no friendships. During the recent game against Liverpool De Jong made a hard tackle on his national team-mate Ryan Babel, who had to leave the pitch injured. Together with Mark van Bommel he is responsible for the defensive block behind the four attacking players in the Dutch team.

Did you know that:

Jerry de Jong, Nigel’s father, was a professional player too? Jerry de Jong played more than 350 league games in the Netherlands and France and played twice in the Dutch national team at the beginning of the 90s.
