Gregory van der Wiel

||||||||||||||||
He is only 22 years old, but Gregory van der Wiel could be one of the surprises in the starting line-up of the Dutch team in South Africa. The attacking full back had a very good campaign at Ajax, having scored four goals already as a right back.
Van der Wiel played his first match for Ajax in the 2006/2007 season, but a serious injury put hold on his breakthrough. With a delay of two seasons, Van der Wiel impressed the Dutch football lovers in the 2008/2009 season with his rushes on the right side of the field. The young right back relegated Uruguayan international Bruno Silva to the bench and made the Romanian player George Ogararu superfluous.
Defensively there are still things to improve, but his attacking abilities make Van der Wiel a dangerous weapon for any team. Being one of the better players at Ajax this season, the young Van der Wiel could be on his way to a place in the starting line-up of Bert van Marwijk. The Amsterdam-born talent has collected seven caps so far.
Did you know that:
Gregory van der Wiel caused a ‘Twitter-case’ this season. Because of a concussion the right back was not allowed to travel to Australia with the Dutch team, who went there for a friendly trip in October 2009. However, shortly after the Dutch departed for Down Under, Van der Wiel visited a concert of rapper Lil Wayne together with some friends and posted photos to his account. Coach Bert van Marwijk was not happy with that and Van der Wiel decided to quit Twitter after the incident.
