The youngest player in Italy’s World cup squad, born May 1, 1987. The defender did not make his Italy debut until March of this year, but his promising debut versus Cameroon in a 0-0 draw and excellent form for Bari convinced Marcello Lippi to take him to South Africa. Incredibly, Bonucci started all 38 Serie A matches in 2009-10 and helped Bari to one of the best defensive records in Serie A as they only conceded 49 goals.

As a youngster, Serie A giants Inter immediately spotted his potential and signed him to their youth team from Viterbese. After loans at Treviso and Pisa, he was sent to Genoa as part of the deal that brought Diego Milito and Thiago Motta to the San Siro last summer. He then went to play for Bari on a co-owenrship basis. After his great season, the likes of Juventus, Manchester City, and other top European sides have shown an interest.

Did you know?

Although he’s only played for the Azzurri twice, he has already scored his first international goal in a 2-1 loss to Mexico.
