Avraam Papadopoulos – With dual-citizenship between Australia and Greece, international service was ultimately a choice for Papadopoulos. His club career led him to Thessaloniki with Aris, for whom he signed as a teenager in 2002. Spending six years in northern Greece, Papadopoulos quickly became a leading defender for the Kitrinomavri. His performances were noticed by perennial Greek Champions Olympiacos as the Piraeus giants secured his signature ahead of the 2008-09 season.
Taking residence at the Giorgos Karaiskakis Stadium, Papadopoulos was immediately given a chance to feature for Greece. Not taking the opportunity for granted, Papadopoulos has regularly featured in the Greek defence since the start of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup. Part of a new generation of defenders, Papadopoulos is viewed as one half of a duo expected to replace the EURO 2004-winning tandem of Traianos Dellas and Michalis Kapsis.
Did You Know?
Papadopoulos initially started out as an attacking-midfielder while at Aris, but eventually began playing as a defender as personnel at the club became sparse during a dark period of financial burden around the start of the new millennium.
