Stephen Appiah - The 29-year-old is the inspirational captain of the Black Stars. He is a strong player and a box-to-box midfielder. He plays with a lot of passion and his presence motivates his colleagues to give their best.

Appiah has very good negotiating skills and has always been on hand to avert clashes between officials and players. In spite of his wealth of experience Appiah is known to be very humble and exudes with passion any time he wears the national jersey.

The midfielder is nicknamed 'Tornado'. He was the first player to take and captain the senior national team at their maiden World Cup in Germany 2006. During Ghana's third game of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Appiah powered in a penalty kick against the United States to send the Black Stars to the second round.

Appiah can create and score goals from all angles with his powerful shots.  He has spent most of his career life in Italy with Parma, Brescia, Juventus and Bologna.

His career life almost ended with Turkish side Fenerbahce with several complicated health issues. A protracted knee injury kept him out of the beautiful game for a very long time until he landed a job with current club Bologna.

Appiah began his career with local club Accra Hearts of Oak in 1995 at age 15. Because he grew up in a community plagued with abject poverty he set up a foundation to aid poor children whose parents cannot afford to pay their fees.

Did you know?

Appiah has designed a clothing line called StepApp with proceeds going into his foundation in aid of the poor in society.
