When the number 29 was announced at the Weserstadium with "Suuu-Per," the fans would always crow the response "Mertesacker!” for the huge defender not only with regards to his height, but Mertesacker was already a real talent, when he started playing for Hannover 96 in Bundesliga. Many clubs were after his signature when he moved to Werder Bremen in 2006. His debut for the Germans was in 2004 when the Mannschaft won 2-0 in Iran.

Since 2004, in nearly 250 Bundesliga matches, Mertesacker has only received 12 yellow card and incredibly low number for a defender. He never needlessly fouls. When he has been sent off, it is usually because of the risky attacking style of Werder Bremen. For Germany in 59 games he has been given just two bookings. He has been nicknamed “Mr. Fairness.”

Did you know?

Jürgen Klinsmann called Per Mertesacker on his 20th birthday. His present was the selection for his first friendly match with Germany. Mertesackers favourite club is Arsenal – behind Werder Bremen, of course.
