Thomas Sorensen - Denmark (PA)
As a commanding figure in the penalty area with excellent handling skills he had the impossible task of replacing Peter Schmeichel when he hung up his gloves in 2001 but did so well that he has been Denmark's first choice goalkeeper ever since.

He has played the whole of his career abroad in England starting out with Sunderland in 1998. His first season was a great success as he kept 29 clean sheets, a club record. This helped Sunderland win promotion to the Premier League.

After five seasons with Sunderland he moved to Aston Villa in 2003 but his last season for the club, the 2007-08 season, was a disaster. Villa had signed Scott Carson on loan from Liverpool and Sorensen was suddenly demoted to Villa's third choice goalkeeper as he fell out of favour with Martin O'Neill.

The only first team appearances that season were for the national team where he continued to be Morten Olsen's first choice.

It was the end of his contract at Villa and he was granted a free transfer to Stoke where he is now back to being first choice between the posts.
