- Rest of Europe
Mostly known to the Ivorian public as Gervinho – a named coined from his name Gervais by a Brazilian coach who was handling the Mimosifcom academy during the lad’s five years there – Yao Kouassi is one of the rising stars of Ivory Coast football.
After playing two professional seasons with Ivorian D2 club Toumodi FC, the young player left for Europe in 2005, landing at K.S.K Beveren – from where many of Asec Mimosas’ young players make their shoot. Proving his worth during two seasons at the Belgian club caught the eyes of French Ligue 1 club Le Mans, who signed him and where he played from 2007 to 2009 before moving to another Ligue 1 club Lille OSC on a transfer fee of £6.9 million.
The 22-year-old Gervinho has scored 17 goals already in this season with his club, making him the seventh highest goal scorer in France.
Hi pace, dribbles and strikes had opened doors for him into Ivory Coast’s national team where he currently wears the coveted number 10 shirt.

Gervinho says this Brazilian-Portuguese alias was given to him to motivate him to play as a Brazilian.
