At 34 years old, one of the veterans of the national team is preparing for his last matches in a green and gold jersey at the 2010 World Cup. Having announced his international retirement, he brings to a close years of invaluable service that have been set against the backdrop of differing fortunes for the game in Australia.

It is entirely appropriate that Chipperfield was the only Europe-based Aussie to attend the 2002 Oceania Nations Cup, forced to pay his own way to the tournament due to the perilous financial position of the game’s governing body Soccer Australia. No matter the stage Chipperfield is a man who has always been heavily relied on to bring balance and solidity to the side, an integral part of the famous squad that travelled to Germany in 2006.

Did You Know?

Chipperfield worked part-time as a school bus driver during his days with the Wollongong Wolves in the National Soccer League, before an overseas move eventually beckoned.
