Mark Milligan -Australia
After making his name with A-League outfit Sydney FC in their inaugural championship-winning season, Milligan was one of two surprise selections in Guus Hiddink’s squad to travel to the 2006 World Cup in Germany. He would go on to make his international debut in a warm-up match before the finals without making an appearance at the tournament itself, though in truth it served as a grooming stage for a young man who’s career seemed set to blossom thereafter.

Whilst still based in Australia he made his most meaningful contribution to the Socceroos when he forced his way into the starting line-up of the senior national team at the 2007 Asian Cup, performing where a number of Europe-based stars failed at the tournament. From thereon Milligan failed to secure the overseas contract that surely beckoned after he impressed both for his country and club, eventually returning to play in the A-League with Newcastle Jets after a bizarre set of events that saw him walk out of a trial in France.

Milligan eventually tried his luck outside of Australia again, enjoying considerable success with Chinese Super League outfit Shanghai Shenhua and simultaneously returning to the international fold under Pim Verbeek, looking a future fit as Australia’s first-choice centre-back.

Did You know?

Milligan trialled in France without the permission of his club Sydney FC, only for that trial to breakdown (due to the player walking out on it) and for him to be forced to return home to the A-League.
