'Why can't referees be punished?' - Mbappe hits out after Neymar red card

Kylian Mbappe believes referees should be punished retrospectively in the same way players are in the wake of Neymar's red card for Paris Saint-Germain.

The Brazilian attacker was dismissed late on in Sunday's 2-2 draw with Marseille when he picked up two yellow cards within two minutes.

Neymar insisted it was "harsh" from the referee to send him off for reacting to a foul from Lucas Ocampos, while coach Unai Emery said it was "not fair" to the former Barcelona star.

However, Mbappe, 18, believes the incident shows that referees should not be immune to criticism or punishment.

"I will not slam the referee because he already had a lot of pressure on his shoulders," Mbappe told reporters.

"The referees have to level with themselves. That wasn't the case tonight. Also, we can't discuss it with them. We have the impression that they are superior to us. That's a problem because we're all part of the same show.

"I think there should be a commission that could fix that.

"We have a player who has been sanctioned [Neymar]. Why can't referees be punished [retrospectively] like the players?"

Edinson Cavani's injury time free-kick rescued a draw for the capital club, leaving them four points clear at the top of Ligue 1 before they take on Nice on Friday.
