Tranmere Rovers v Liverpool Betting: No minnows massacre on the cards for Reds

Jurgen Klopp's charges make their first pre-season appearance when they take on Micky Mellon's men, but do not expect a walkover for the visitors

Liverpool's first pre-season friendly fixture takes place on Wednesday night when Jurgen Klopp's men make the short trip to Prenton Park to face Tranmere Rovers.

The Reds enjoyed a successful season last term, securing a top four finish - enough to ensure that Champions League football will return to Anfield during the forthcoming campaign.

Klopp's men will face a crucial Champions League play-off next month and the former Borussia Dortmund boss will be determined that his side are fit and firing for that tie, as well as their Premier League opener against Watford at Vicarage Road.

Liverpool's preparations for those fixtures begin here and the Reds are expected to kick off their pre-season campaign with a win, with bet365 offering just 2/7 (1.29) that the Premier League side come out on top.

Tranmere Rovers came up short in their bid to be promoted back to the Football League last term after suffering a bitterly disappointing defeat against Forest Green Rovers in the National League promotion play-off final at Wembley.

Micky Mellon's charges are chalked up as favourites to take the title in the National League in the forthcoming campaign but the enormity of the task facing Rovers here is reflected by the  7/1 (8.0)  for the non-league side to win, with  15/4 (4.75) that this pre-season fixture ends all square.

Liverpool fans have been left a little frustrated by their side's lack of transfer activity so far this summer, with their concern likely exacerbated by the steady stream of arrivals at rivals Everton. Indeed, only Dominic Solanke - who starred for his country in England's Under-20 World Cup win last month - and Mohamed Salah have signed on so far.

It remains to be seen whether either man is involved when the Reds travel to take on Tranmere, but the Premier League side boast plenty of depth in their squad and, irrespective of who is selected by Klopp, Liverpool will likely prove to be too strong.

Keeping things tight may be the extent of Tranmere's ambitions and it is worth noting that the Reds were forced to settle for a narrow 1-0 win when they visited Prenton Park in their pre-season curtain-raiser last summer.

A similar scenario could unfold here and backing fewer than three goals at 13/10 (2.30)  could offer decent value for punters ahead of Wednesday's friendly fixture.
