Mariano has joined the Brazil squad for Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier vs Paraguay.

The Sevilla full-back replaces Dani Alves, who is suspended after picking up another yellow card in Thursday’s 4-1 victory over Uruguay in Montevideo.

The 30-year-old has been in fine form for Jorge Sampaoli’s impressive Sevilla, who have challenged Barcelona and Real Madrid for the league title in Spain this season.

He was among a number of players observed closely by Tite’s staff during a scouting expedition to Europe last month.

Mariano’s previous international call-up arrived in October 2010, when Mano Menezes named the then Fluminense man in a squad to face Iran and Ukraine.

FIFA rules stipulate that clubs must be provided 15 days’ notice prior to the international call-ups of their players, but Sevilla instantly released Mariano following a phone call from CBF technical coordinator Edu Gaspar on Friday morning.

Mariano will join up with the rest of the squad in Sao Paulo on Saturday ahead of the clash with Paraguay at the Corinthians Arena.
