Milner boasting about bettering Neymar & De Bruyne on Champions League assist chart

James Milner is taking every opportunity to remind his Liverpool team-mates that he is currently more productive in the Champions League than Neymar and Kevin De Bruyne.

The Reds midfielder has starred in Europe this season, posting seven assists for grateful team-mates.

He added the latest of that tally in a 5-0 demolition of Porto in the first leg of a one-sided last-16 encounter, as he teed up Roberto Firmino, while it was also his effort which cannoned off the woodwork and allowed Mohamed Salah to produce a classy juggled finish.

Milner now sits three clear at the top of the continental creativity chart, with star turns at heavyweight rivals such as Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City trailing in his wake.

The 32-year-old is eager to make everybody aware of that record, with Reds skipper Jordan Henderson telling the club’s official website during a warm weather training break in Marbella: “He has told a few of us that over the last couple of hours, to be fair!

“He is a fantastic player. It doesn’t really matter how old he is, he is as fit as anyone and you can see that on the pitch in how much he contributes to the team.

“He was brilliant again at Porto. He’s got a lot of assists in the Champions League, so hopefully he can continue it.”

Milner has had to scrap for regular minutes this season, with just 10 Premier League starts handed to him.

He has, however, appeared in 31 fixtures across all competitions and remains an important part of Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

His vast experience and willingness to work hard for the collective cause has sparked talk that he could be offered an extension at Anfield to a contract set to expire in the summer of 2019.
