The World Cup continues to draw closer, and Mexico manager Juan Carlos Osorio has to like what he sees from his Europe-based contingent.
He must be especially pleased with events lately in Portugal.
Benfica forward Raul Jimenez had previously been stuck to the bench in a super-sub role but this weekend started for the third time in April. It's Porto that's on track to win the title, though, and Jesus Corona earned a start for the Dragons. 'El Tecatito' paid off his coach's faith with a goal in a 5-1 victory over Vitoria Setubal, with midfielder Hector Herrera wearing the captain's armband and going the full 90 minutes as usual.
In Belgium, goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa had a busy day. He was pelted early on, with Club Brugge taking a 4-1 lead on Standard Liege, but Memo's club rallied to a 4-4 draw. Brugge remains the favorite to take the title, but all teams in the final phase of the Belgian playoffs are still in the race. In the Europa League playoff round-robin, Omar Govea assisted Royal Excel Mouscron's only goal but the team fell 3-1 to Leuven.
There were no league games in the Netherlands this weekend, but Hirving Lozano scored on April 18 in PSV's draw with Roda. While PSV already has locked up the Eredivisie title, 'Chucky' is in the race to be the top scorer for the Dutch league. His goal Wednesday was outshone by Alireza Jahanbakhsh's hat trick, which puts the Iran international in the lead for the top scorer crown with 18 goals to Lozano's 16.
Carlos Vela continued his hot streak with a goal for LAFC against the Montreal Impact while Giovani dos Santos came on as a substitute for the LA Galaxy in a 2-0 loss to Atlanta United. Gio went 24 minutes in his first action since a March hamstring injury. Vela threw out the first pitch at an Los Angeles Dodgers game this week and outperformed Dos Santos' embarrassing attempt from 2015.
