The former Red Devils midfielder believes Jose Mourinho is wasting his time looking for defensive reinforcements, with the window now almost closed

Manchester United should have been looking for a new striker not a centre-half, says Paul Ince, with Jose Mourinho now facing further frustration on transfer deadline day.

The Red Devils have spent much of the summer searching for defensive reinforcements, with that search dragging on into the final hours of the window.

Attention has drifted from Yerry Mina to Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire to Diego Godin, with Mourinho unable to get any deals over the line.

He has now admitted that he may be left empty-handed, but Ince believes the Portuguese has been looking in the wrong place all along.

The former Red Devils midfielder told BBC Sport on what United need: “Last season, from a footballing point of view, United weren't great.

“Their fans were moaning that they did not attack enough and although I think Mourinho has tried to address that, they really need to hit the ground running this time.

“The signs are not great, though. Everything should be geared towards the first game of the season but instead it is all about Mourinho.

“There are some positives, and I am expecting a big season from Paul Pogba after his World Cup, but I definitely think they need another striker as back-up to Romelu Lukaku - someone in a similar mould to the Belgian.”

United are set to open their Premier League campaign at home to Leicester on Friday.

Any additions made on deadline day would be free to make their debut in that contest, but Mourinho needs to move quickly.

It appears unlikely that he will be looking to bolster his attacking ranks, though, with the Red Devils set to place their faith in the likes of Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Marcus Rashford.
