Man City set Champions League knockouts record with Basel thrashing

Pep Guardiola's men continued their outstanding season with a last-16 thrashing of the Swiss side

Manchester City's season continues to impress and Tuesday's win over Basel in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 clash saw the club set another record.

The 4-0 win for Pep Guardiola's side is the largest margin ever for an English team away from home in the Champions League knockout rounds.

Liverpool’s 3-0 away victory over PSV Eindhoven in the quarter-finals of the 2006-07 season was the previous best.

It should come as no shock that this City side could set such a record. Guardiola's men have been fantastic away from the Etihad Stadium this season, having won 16 of their 21 away matches in all competitions, a mark matched only by PSG from Europe's top five leagues.

The win was also City's 34th of the season in all competitions, one better than their total through the entirety of last season.

One of the top reasons for their success away from home, at least in the Champions League, has been the form of star man Sergio Aguero.

Aguero netted against Basel on Tuesday, having also scored in all three of City's away matches in the group stage.

Former Manchester United forward Dwight Yorke is the last player to accomplish that for an English club in the competition, having done it for Sir Alex Ferguson's side during the 1998/99 season.

While some would be quick to pass off Basel as an easy team to thrash for the likes of City, with the Swiss club having never made it past the round of 16, the win for Guardiola's side should not be overlooked.

Basel had not lost at St. Jakob-Park in the last 16 prior to Tuesday night, with a win and a draw on their previous record.
