Dimas, Nichols headline Wanderers departures

Captain Dimas and vice-captain Mitch Nichols are amongst 10 players to depart Western Sydney Wanderers on Thursday.

Western Sydney coach Tony Popovic claimed after the Wanderers' AFC Champions League win on Wednesday that the club have 18 players signed for next season, indicating a greater sense of stability within the squad compared to previous campaigns.

But the Wanderers still announced a mass exit with the contracts of Dimas, Nichols, Scott Neville, Bruno Pinatares, Ryan Griffiths, Liam Youlley, Stefan Zinni and Emilio Martinez coming to an end.

On-loan stars Nico Martinez and Terry Antonis will return to Olympiacos and PAOK, respectively, but Popovic has declared Western Sydney will contact the two Greek clubs to see if the duo can play for the Red-and-Black in 2017-18.

Antonis was brilliant for Western Sydney after joining the club in the January transfer window and quickly cemented a spot in central midfield, while Martinez (4 goals, 8 assists) was third in the Johnny Warren Medal voting.

"They're two players that we obviously like but it's not as simple as us having a decision on that. We'll speak to their clubs and see if something is possible," Popovic said.

Dimas was Western Sydney's captain this season but finished the campaign behind Antonis and Kearyn Baccus in the central midfield pecking order, and the 34-year-old leaves after 58 appearances in two seasons.

Nichols, 28, scored 13 goals in his 63 games for the Wanderers and is understood to be looking at options in Europe, while Neville revealed after Western Sydney's A-League season ended that he will play for Perth Glory next term.

Pinatares never truly settled in the A-League, with the Uruguayan making just 12 starts in the A-League after joining from Cerro in June, while Griffiths also struggled for game-time following his mid-season arrival.

Youngsters Yoully, Zinni and Martinez made less than 10 senior appearances between them.

Shannon Cole's departure was announced before Wednesday's win over Shanghai SIPG, while Mario Shabow has left the club to join Newcastle Jets.
