Aguero credits Guardiola with making him better as he closes on 200 goals for Man City

Sergio Aguero believes Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has made him an even better player, as he closes on 200 goals for the Premier League leaders.

The Argentine frontman needs just one more effort to reach a double century at the Etihad Stadium.

He has been prolific throughout his career, with the target found over 350 times for club and country.

Aguero is now 29 years of age and could be considered to have reached his peak, but he says his game has been taken to even greater heights by City’s demanding boss.

He told the club’s official website: “I think being able to adapt to Pep’s playing style has a large contributing factor in my form this season.

“I’m driven to keep on learning, and I have always been able to absorb the lessons of other coaches and put them to practice.

“Pep is very demanding, but I simply had to adapt my game and mindset and change how I play to his style.

“That means helping recover the ball, press, pass it around more, search for my team-mates and remain open for passes to find the goal.

“It’s a continuous learning process, and I value that kind of thing as it helps me improve as a player.”

Aguero will be hoping to add to his impressive goal tally in his next outing against Liverpool on Tuesday, with City needing inspiration from somewhere as they seek to outcome a 3-0 first deficit in a heavyweight Champions League quarter-final contest.

He added on the challenges to come: “This has been a very intense season and the final stretch will likely be demanding as well.

“We’re prepared, and the whole staff is doing a great job to face what’s up ahead. I have a great deal of trust in the team, and the Champions League remains one of our objectives. 

“There is everything to play for.”

Aguero has already helped City to a Carabao Cup triumph this season, while another Premier League title will soon be added to his collection despite a derby defeat to Manchester United last time out.

It is, however, in Europe that the Blues had been hoping to put down a marker among the elite, and they have it all to do against Liverpool if they are to remain in the hunt for continental glory.
