Veteran striker Nuno Gomes is looking forward to getting back into the groove with Benfica, and before they meet Monaco in a friendly match he has spoken of the club’s long-term objectives this season.

The 34-year-old striker was part of the side that claimed the Portuguese Liga last season, edging out surprise challengers Braga, and also played a significant role as O Glorioso progressed deep into the Europa League.

Speaking to Benfica TV, the former Fiorentina man pinpointed the Supertaca encounter against Porto has the “prime objective” of his side this season, with the second being “to retain the title”.

“The championship is upon us and, obviously, we have huge expectations,” he affirmed.

Speaking of the forthcoming challenge against Monaco, he appeared relaxed about the friendly, indicating: “I hope it's a big party. After all, it will be a practice match for our team to try to get us in shape as quick as possible, but we want to win and give joy to the fans.”
