After reports earlier this week suggesting that Benfica’s David Luiz could make a summer switch to Real Madrid, Portuguese journal A Bola has stated that if the decision was solely down to Jorge Valdano, los Blancos would sign the 22-year-old Brazilian.

Able to play in either the centre of left of defence, the Brazil Under-20 international star has been a mainstay of the Lisbon outfit’s rise to the summit of the Portuguese Liga this season, catching the eye of los Merengues, who reputedly made a move for him in January.

Two factors prevented the Madrid outfit from capturing their prey. Firstly, Benfica consider the defender to be a vital component of their side and feared that their championship dreams may have been extinguished without him, while secondly they were only willing to sell at the player’s release fee, which is estimated at €50 million.

It has been suggested that Real don’t want to part with such vast sums of money for the player, but they may be willing to cut the fee that the Portuguese club are presently paying off with regards to Javi Garcia and Javier Saviola, both of whom joined Benfica last summer.
