Alvaro Pereira: Porto Are Quietly Confident Of Claiming Portuguese Title
After hammering one of their fiercest rivals in midweek, the Dragoes are seeking to worm themselves back into the title race...
By Robin Bairner
An impressive midweek victory over Sporting CP has served to galvanise the confidence of Porto, according to Alvero Pereira, who believes his side can build on their 5-2 cup victory and go on to win the league.
The Portuguese Liga is now past its halfway stage and Porto’s position is presently inclement. They are currently stationed third, with six points the gap between themselves and Braga and Benfica, who are joint top.
“We focus solely on winning our games,” he told A Bola quickly before going off to train on Friday morning. “FC Porto are the current national champions and we only have to think of ourselves. We are quietly confident of winning the title a fifth time [in succession].
“We are working to catch up on the leaders. We seek to outperform ourselves in every match. I think that FC Porto are at a good level and hopefully will be able to remain so until the end of the season.
“We produced a great performance for the Sporting game and need to follow that path.”
Porto’s next challenge is a fixture against financially bereft Naval, who are 10th in the 18-team league.
