Official: Carlos Carvalhal Appointed As New Sporting CP Coach

The Portuguese giants have found a new coach...

Portuguese powerhouse Sporting CP have appointed Carlos Carvalhal as their new head coach on a contract until the end of the season with an option for a further year, a statement on the club's official website reads.

The Europa League hopefuls were in desperate need of a new coach following the resignation of Paulo Bento about a week ago. Bento had lost faith that he could turn things around at Sporting and opted to throw in the towel.

The 43-year-old Carvalhal first made coaching headlines in 2001-02 when he guided third division Leixoes SC to the Portuguese Cup final. He subsequently led Vitoria, Belenenses, Braga, Beira-Mar and Asteras Tripolis before joining Maritimo Funchal earlier this year.

He got the sack at Maritimo in September following the club's abysmal start to the season and had been out of work ever since.

Sporting currently sit eighth in the Portuguese Liga, eleven points adrift of leaders Braga. They need just a draw from their remaining two Group D games to reach the last 32 of the Europa League though.
