It was claimed a few weeks ago that the Catalans had their eye on the Portuguese international and if both reports are true then it could well spark a bidding war in the summer.
Jornal de Noticias believes that Madrid want to bring him to the Spanish capital to partner him with Pepe, who he has played with for Portugal.
This might well mean the end of Fabio Cannavaro's career at the Bernabeu, unless the Italian is prepared to play second fiddle to the pair.
As both Madrid and Barcelona have shown in the past they have are not afraid to splash the cash for defenders and Alves is likely to cost as much as Pepe did.
The 27-year old has a contract with Porto until 2012 but has declared his intention to succeed at a big European club.
His performances in the Champions League this season have only enhanced his reputation and his release clause of €30 million could be a price worth paying.
Whether or not the Catalans will see it that way is not clear as they already have a few centre-backs, including young Gerard Pique.
At the price, they could well end up leaving this signing for Madrid, which would give them an interesting Portuguese pairing at the back.
