The former France defender has urged the Ligue 1 outfit's chairman, Louis Nicollin, not even to consider the idea of bringing the Argentine to the south of France
Club chairman Louis Nicollin has recently expressed his intention to sound out the 52-year-old as a replacement for current boss Rene Girard, whose contract expires at the end of the season.
However, Di Meco, writing in a blog for RMC Sport, believes this would be an extremely ill-judged move.
"This is the worst thing that could happen," he said of the potential appointment.
"There is still doubt about Maradona's qualities as a coach. He has no achievements. I feel that he is capable of derailing a club which has worked well for years within six months.
"[Montpellier] is a healthy club, with a trainer, a structure that works well - it is a people's club. If he [Nicollin] wants to sustain the club, do not bring in Maradona.
"It must be Jean Fernandez, Antoine Kombouare, Luis Fernandez... whoever. Someone who has a vision of the club in the long term.
"This is why I do not even believe in this story."
Maradona is currently under contract with the Dubai Sport Council, working as a global ambassador for the institution.
