Gabriel Heinze says Diego Maradona would be a good choice to replace current Montpellier coach Rene Girard when his contract expires at the end of the season.
The 34-year-old defender now plays his football back in his homeland, for Newell’s Old Boys, and was a member of the Argentina team managed by the Albiceleste legend at the 2010 World Cup.
And after la Pallaide president Louis Nicollin admitted his interest in acquiring the services of the 52-year-old, Heinze gave his support to his former boss.
“For the players this is fantastic, at Montpellier he could do well,” Heinze told RMC. “This is a special person, this is Maradona.”
Heinze himself enjoyed a successful period in France, winning the Coupe de France during his time at Paris Saint-Germain, as well as lifting the Ligue 1 title with Marseille.
Montpellier are currently sixth in the division after enduring a disappointing campaign following their title-winning exploits last term and trail leaders PSG by 10 points.
