Papin: Gignac is Marseille's best recruit

The former Phoceens man has paid tribute to the French international's performances this season, and says he is like a new signing for Elie Baup
Former Marseille striker Jean-Pierre Papin has praised Andre-Pierre Gignac, saying the striker's return to form and fitness makes him like a new signing.

The France international only managed to score one goal last term, in a season blighted by a string of injuries.

The 26-year-old appears to have put those troubles behind him in the early part of this campaign, however, having netted twice in Europa League qualifying, before scoring three goals in four Ligue 1 games.

"I said before Le Championnat that he would be Marseille's best recruit, and this is the case," the 1991 European Footballer of the Year told La Provence.

"After a goal or a good game confidence comes back. When you have qualities, you do not lose it all overnight."

Marseille currently sit on top of Ligue 1 with four wins from as many matches, and face Nancy after the international break.
