New Olympique de Marseille signing Rod Fanni has explained that he is proud to have completed a move to the French champions from Stade Rennais.
An injury to Cesar Azpilicueta prompted OM to approach les Rouge et Noir over the international right-back, and after a significant period of negotiations a deal was finally brokered on Wednesday.
“I am delighted and so proud to sign for Marseille,” Fanni, who was also being courted by Liverpool, explained to the media, Ligue 1’s official website has reported. “I have never hidden my desire to play abroad, and that was my priority for a long time. However, when OM appeared on the scene, it made me think again. Everyone knows that I am from this part of the world and Marseille are a very special club to me.
“There is no denying that I have come here to try and win the title, and to do well in the Champions League. I am very ambitious. There is no point in coming here otherwise. I also believe that coming here can be good for my international career. My performances are the most important thing at the end of the day, but being at Marseille can surely only help.”
French transfer rules mean that clubs are afforded one wildcard signing outside the regular transfer windows, and OM have taken advantage of that rule to sign the former Nice and Racing Club de Lens full-back with immediate effect. Indeed, he is ready to debut on Sunday against Olympique Lyonnais.
“The last few weeks have been pretty tiring, but I feel ready,” he confessed. “There have been an awful lot of discussions and negotiations, but I will be raring to go against Lyon on Sunday.”
OM are thought to have spent in the region of €4 million on the powerful defender.
