Yoann Gourcuff has stated that he needs to take on more defensive chores with France due to Samir Nasri's positioning.
Against England on Wednesday night, Nasri played the primary attacking role, while Gourcuff was a little deeper, dictating the play from a more orthodox central midfield role. This seems to suit the former Girondins de Bordeaux and Milan man.
“It went very well,” he explained to the media after the game. “I was further back than him [Nasri], more than usual, so I tried to help Yann M'Vila in his defensive duties. Samir was close to Karim [Benzema].
“There was a lot of freedom and we were able to enjoy it. Everything came from our movement. Samir was doing good things, but the whole team worked well.
“We are satisfied, we take pleasure, we did great things.”
Gourcuff has been criticised for some of his recent performances, but on the slick Wembley surface his looked back towards his best, showing great confidence on the ball as les Bleus charged to a memorable 2-1 victory.
