Coupe de France Round-Up: Amateurs Quevilly Into Semis At Boulogne’s Expense, PSG Through On Penalties
France’s premier cup competition threw up a tremendous shock as amateur side Quevilly reached the last four, comfortably eliminating their struggling Ligue 1 opponents...

Quevilly 3-1 Boulogne-Sur-Mer
Fourth flight Quevilly continue their remarkable run in the Coupe de France, progressing to the semi-finals after eliminating Ligue 1 strugglers Boulogne at the quarter-final stage.
In front of 12,000 supporters, the amateurs starred against their full strength opponents, starting perfectly. After just 11 minutes of play the impressive Anthony Laup crossed from the right hand side for Florian Coquio to convert into the empty net.
Buoyed by this early blow, Quevilly created several more openings before deservedly extending their lead on 29 minutes. A terrible error from Habib Bellaid presented man of the match Laup with a relatively simple chance to run in on goal and defeat the exposed Jean-Francois Bedenik.
Some hope was restored for the top flight outfit in first half stoppage time, when Anthony Lecointe’s centre was forced home by Damien Marcq, though USBCO would not build on that strike after the interval.
When Quevilly made the score 3-1 midway through the second period, Laup was unsurprisingly a central figure once more. His cross to Abdel Ouahbi was ideal to allow the on-rushing attacker to strike.
Matt Moussilou might have pulled another back for Boulogne late on, but the striker missed the target, leaving his side thoroughly embarrassed by a tepid showing.
Auxerre 0-0 Paris Saint-Germain (PSG win 6-5 on penalties)
Paris Saint-Germain completed an evening of cup shocks by eliminating Champions League hopeful Auxerre, though they required a penalty shoot-out to win through in a match played behind closed doors.
As the scoreline might suggest, this was not a vintage encounter, with few genuine chances for either side. PSG tended to have the better of the play, but it was AJA who had the opening effort of the match. Daniel Niculae hasn’t been known for his goals of late, but a fine lob nearly beat Apoula Edel, who scrambled back well to clear.
Les Parisien did not enjoy a single really threatening effort on goal for all their early bluster, though their dominance of the game would become more pronounced after the break. On 50 minutes Guillaume Hoarau seemed set to score after latching onto a long ball forward, but he mishit when ideally placed in front of goal.
The hosts remained a threat when they did push forward, though Ireneusz Jelen was limited to one strong drive that was well saved by Edel as the game petered out to a disappointing conclusion and the inevitable extra-time.
In the additional periods, there was a little more action to capture the interest. Mateja Kezman cracked the post for PSG in the first period, while Hoarau flashed an effort back in the second.
All ten of the regulation penalties were scored in the initial stage of the shoot-out, but Edel was les Parisiens’ hero when he saved from Julien Quercia in sudden death. Experienced head Claude Makelele did the rest, sending PSG through to the last four.
