The fine form of Burgundy outfit Auxerre continued on Saturday evening, when Jean Fernandez’s men stepped up their charge towards the Champions League on the back of a clean sheet against Valenciennes.
Despite the hosts enjoying the better of the opening exchanges, the best they could muster was a series of early set-pieces that ultimately came to nothing. Indeed, the first alert of the game came at the home end, when a centre from Foued Kadir picked out Gregory Pujol, who couldn’t finish.
This pattern would continue, with Pujol again worrying the home rearguard by threatening to pounce on a short Jean-Pascal Mignot backpass. Olivier Sorin was out decisively to clear though.
Ireneusz Jelen has so often proven to be the offensive key for AJA this season, and so it would be this evening. Roy Contout delivered a long ball over the top for the Pole to hare onto, round Nicolas Penneteau and roll into an empty net. He might have had a second moments later after linking well with Aurelien Capoue, but Penneteau blocked.
After the early stages of the second half offered little, AJA nearly scored twice in the space of as many minutes. Jelen atypically smashed a good chance over the bar after fine work from Benoit Pedretti and Cedric Hengbart, while Penneteau would block well from Daniel Niculae.
Late chances were few, and AJA were allowed to cruise to a valuable triplet of points.
Racing Club de Lens 1-1 Paris Saint-Germain
It threatened to be another miserable night for fans of PSG, but their side snatched a late leveller against Lens to earn a point.
The hosts were quickly into their stride, but they were finding chances tough to come by as PSG defended well in the early stages. If les Parisiens were reassured defensively, that certainly wasn’t the case in the centre of the field as they struggled to put a good sequence of passes together. An Issam Jemaa corner did need turned over the bar, but there wasn’t too much to worry visiting shot stopper Apoula Edel.
PSG’s confidence would soon rise, allowing them to become more dangerous as the half wore on. Stephane Sessegnon cracked a shot that forced Vedran Runje to hold at the second attempt, while Mevlut Erding flicked a free kick from the Benin ace onto the bar just before the break. These efforts sandwiched a dangerous centre from Lens’ Marco Ramos, whose fizzing cross in front of the goalmouth evaded everyone.
Eduardo was first to threaten in the second half for les Sang et Or, cutting by Christophe Jallet on the left before having a shot deflected over the top by Zoumana Camara.
This effort seemed to spark the hosts into a flurry of action. Adil Hermach thumped a powerful shot just over the top, and a minute later les Sang et Or were ahead. Henri Bedimo’s corner wasn’t properly cleared, and Sebastien Roudet took full advantage, crashing a left footed shot home from the edge of the box via the aid of a deflection.
Antoine Kombouare’s side rarely made a real fist of fiding a leveller, though they thought they had drawn level just before full-time, when Camara thumped home an Hoarau flick-on. The defender was offside, however, and the goal was disallowed.
Three minutes into stoppage time the game was levelled. Younnes Sankhare’s free kick was missed by Vedran Runje, but not by Sessegnon, who slipped the ball into the net to steal a somewhat ill-deserved point for the guests.
Nice 2-3 Nancy
Four first half goals had Nice and Nancy set up for a grandstand second period, though it proved to be something of a disappointing affair until stoppage time, when ASNL stole maximum points.
While all the evening’s other games got off to slow starts, the Stade du Ray saw two goals in the first seven minutes. Sloppy home defending allowed France Under-21 defender Djamel Bakar to finish with a cool side-foot effort just five minutes after the referee’s first whistle had blown, but this advantage would last barely 60 seconds as Renato Civelli immediately replied with a firm header from a corner kick.
Nancy were largely content to attack on the counter, and this was proving effective as Nice were heaving each time the Lorraine side pushed on. Ultimately this would pay dividends on 26 minutes, when a long ball forward was touched on by Bakar to Jonathan Brison, who finished from 18 yards.
Chris Malonga attempted to make it three soon afterwards, but his thumping shot was blocked by David Ospina, and soon Nice would be level. Drissa Diakite’s long ball forward was turned on by Loic Remy into the path of Chaouki Ben Saada, whose shot beyond Gennaro Bracigliano was true.
Abbes Ouaddou and Alfred N’Diaye both sent good chances off target in the early stages of the second half as Nice started slowly, but les Aiglons responded through a long range Didier Digard drive that was well handled by Bracigliano.
Substitute Issiar Dia, perhaps still cold after wandering off the bench, missed a fine late chance, pushing a Brison pass wide of goal from deep inside the box. This seemed to consign the game to a draw, but Dia pounced on the rebound of a Malonga shot to win the game with 91 minutes on the clock.
Stade Rennais 1-0 Monaco
Guy Lacombe’s return to Rennes with Monaco was a thoroughly frustrating affair, as the men from the principality were hopelessly impotent against the Bretons, sliding to a 1-0 loss.
The spectre of recent poor performances didn’t seem to be hanging too heavily over les Rouge et Noir as they started the game off in a positive manner, though this encounter didn’t provide any clear-cut openings as the teams cancelled each other out in the early stages. It was little surprise that it was a set-play the opened the game up, Jimmy Briand touching home a delicious free kick from Sylvain Marveaux.
The Bretons impressed in the early stages of a fragmented second half, though they were still finding significant efforts of goal tough to come by. Marveaux had an effort easily held by Stephane Ruffier, while Fabien Lemoine had a weak drive from distance easily fielded too.
Monaco offered no real resistance, despite the introduction of livewire forward Park Chu-Young, whose industry largely went unrewarded.
Sochaux 1-0 Toulouse
Francis Gillot’s Sochaux side would pinch a late three points against Toulouse in an entertaining but tight game in Doubs.
Though le Tefece would enjoy much of the early possession, they failed to register a shot on target for the first 35 minutes, though Franck Tabanou did have the ball in the net from an Albin Ebondo centre, only to have the effort disallowed for offside. They were, however, the dominant force in the closing moments of the first half.
Prior to those concluding moments before the break, Sochaux were the more progressive team in possession, as Yassin Mikari’s third minute suggested they might be. The Tunisian had his shot kicked away by Yohann Pele, while the ‘keeper dealt with another couple of tame first half efforts with relative ease.
If les Lionceaux were the main aggressors in the first period, it was the guests who impressed more after the interval. Teddy Richert had to punch away a dangerous cross that was arrowing towards Moussa Sissoko’s head, while Kevin Dupuis wasted a good opening when well placed 15 yards out. Soon afterwards Colin Kazim-Richards smacked an effort into the home side netting.
Following this effort the hosts surged. Vaclav Sverkos had a penalty appeal turned down before Nicolas Maurice-Belay had an effort blocked. With eight minutes remaining the decisive blow was struck, Ryan Boudabouz bending a brilliant free kick between Pele and his near post.
Toulouse had no time to recover as their hopelessly inconsistent campaign continues.
