Boulogne-Sur-Mer 1-0 Guingamp
Coupe de France holders Guingamp will not be repeating their remarkable feat of claiming the crown as they were eliminated by Ligue 1 strugglers Boulogne-Sur-Mer.
The first half was a tight affair, with a Laurent Agouazi shot the best that either side could muster. His shot cracked off the post of the visiting goal.
After the break, Boulogne turned the screw, though not until their guests had passed up a fine double-chance. Thibault Giresse set up Muri Ogunbiyi, though he would be denied by Florian Bague. From the rebound, Guillaume Borne failed to clear the ball properly, though Giresse failed to turn the ball into the net when it fell to him.
On the hour mark USBCO grabbed the lead. Yann Lachour produced a pass to Alexandre Cuvillier, who sent a shot from the edge of the box into the net.
Boulogne would even have the better of the late openings, though Gilmar passed up a presentable chance for Guingamp after being set free down the left channel. He failed to hit the target, rendering EAG’s last good opening wasted.
Beauvais 1-4 Sochaux
Sochaux had no problems dispatching the challenge of third division side Beauvais on Wednesday evening, paving their way into the last eight of the competition with ease.
Les Lionceaux would not be at their very peak throughout the match, but their finishing was exemplary. Marvin Martin scored the first of his brace on the 15 minute mark, presented with an ideal centre by Ideye Brown and side-footing home with little effort. When the second goal arrived just before half an hour had been played, it was a case of deja vu as Brown again got free down the left and sent over a telling ball for Martin.
Beauvais reduced the deficit on the stroke of half-time after Damien Perquis had committed a clumsy challenge in the box. From the ensuing penalty kick, Canales converted.
The second half would be a less interesting affair than the first period, but that did not stop Sochaux moving further ahead. Yassin Mikari was tripped in the visiting box, allowing Ryad Boudebouz to quickly restore his side’s two goal advantage after the restart.
Francis Gillot’s men completed the scoring with six minutes remaining. Mikari was set free down the left channel and finished confidently, rolling the ball into the very corner of the visiting net.
Quevilly 1-0 Stade Rennais
Arguably the biggest shock of the Coupe de France this season came in Quevilly, where the hosts dispatched Rennes, despite having a lower league standing than their visitors’ reserve team.
A strong Breton side started the match in a positive fashion, though good chances were passed up by Jimmy Briand, Asamoah Gyan and especially Alexander Tettey, who finished weakly when through on goal.
Slowly the hosts began to get back into the game and exert some pressure of their own. On half-time, this told when Beaugrard fired home a free kick.
The second half brought with it a powerful Gyan effort that cracked the bar and a real opportunity for Carlos Bocanegra, who lobbed narrowly over the crossbar. With one last effort, Sylvain Marveaux shot wide of goal, meaning les Rouge et Noir suffered a hugely embarrassing loss only days after defeating Ligue 1 champions Bordeaux.
Vesoul 0-1 Paris Saint-Germain
PSG had a few scares en route to the quarter-finals of the Coupe de France but just managed to dance by Vesoul in their last 16 encounter.
After withstanding a little early pressure, les Parisiens nearly took the lead on eight minutes when Mamadou Sakho had a shot saved by the foot of the home goalkeeper from close range. This was shortly followed by the only goal of the game, which was created by a one-two between Stephane Sessegnon and Ludovic Giuly. The former Roma man ran clear to place the ball into the net.
An unimpressive first half followed, though after the break there was definitely more life about the game. Maire drove a tremendous half-volley wide midway through the second period, which set the game to life. Of course, it was aided by red cards shown to Paul and Sessegnon after a tussle between the two that was started by a bad foul on the PSG man.
At ten-a-side, PSG were just happy to hold on. Vesoul tried their luck on several occasions from distance, but it was not to be their evening, with their efforts flying just wide of Edel’s goal on countless occasions.
