Ligue 1 Team Of The Week: Round 23
There was a festival of attacking football in France this week, but there were impressive performances all over the field. Goal.com’s Robin Bairner takes a look at the very best Le Championnat had to offer...

AJ Auxerre, AS Monaco, AS Nancy-Lorraine, AS Saint-Etienne, Bordeaux, FC Lorient, FC Sochaux, Grenoble Foot 38, Le Mans UC 72, LOSC Lille Métropole, Montpellier HSC, OGC Nice, Olympique de Marseille, Olympique Lyonnais, Paris Saint-Germain, RC Lens, Stade Rennais FC, Toulouse FC, US Boulogne, Valenciennes FC
FORMATION: 4-4-2
Goalkeeper
Lionel Letizi (Nice): Playing in only his second game of the season, veteran goalkeeper Letizi impressed against Lille as he helped les Aiglons to a 1-1 draw at the Stade du Ray. A great double save towards the end of the match ensured the struggling Mediterranean club move seven points clear of the drop zone.
Defence
Mathieu Debuchy (Lille): LOSC’s right-back provided valuable support for his attacking players against Nice, regularly breaking down the flank to send in a series of dangerous and precise crosses into the box. Was solid defensively, particularly in the latter stages of the match.
Daniel Congre (Toulouse): Widely regarded as one of the most reliable centre-backs in Ligue 1 over the campaign to date, Congre enhanced his reputation still further with an excellent performance against Olympique Lyonnais. He marshalled Bafetimbi Gomis well, helping le Tefece to achieve a clean sheet against les Gones.
Petter Hansson (Stade Rennais): Rennes may have conceded twice at the weekend, but even that was something of an achievement given the relentless pressure that Bordeaux put them under for long spells of their fixture in Brittany. Hansson stood up brilliantly to Marouane Chamakh and was not afraid to use his physicality to his advantage. A key reason as to why Rennes achieved a 4-2 win.
Henri Bedimo (Racing Club de Lens): The Cameroon star was making his debut for Lens and made an instant impression. Keener to get forward than regular left-back Marco Ramos, the 25-year-old acted as the catalyst to les Sang et Or’s opening goal by providing the cross that Eduardo tucked back for Kevin Monnet-Pacquet to shoot home. Several other dangerous moments were provided by his boot.
Midfield
Blaise Matuidi (Saint-Etienne): Not recognised for his goal scoring abilities, Matuidi was the man to help Saint-Etienne out of their four-month winless streak at home. The highly-rated anchoring midfielder shot home from just outside the box to open the scoring against Monaco, and was then stoical in his defensive role, leading his side to a 3-0 victory.
Mathieu Valbuena (Olympique de Marseille): The winger was out of favour in the early weeks of the season under Didier Deschamps, but recent performances have only served to give ‘DD’ some real selection headaches over the coming months. Valbuena could be found in superb touch as OM romped to a hugely impressive 5-1 victory over Valenciennes on Sunday evening, with many of their best attacks channelled through ‘le Petit Velo’.
Daisuke Matsui (Grenoble Foot38): Having only won once in league play before Saturday’s incredible 5-0 demolition of Auxerre, it’s fair to say that Grenoble’s weekend efforts came as something of a shock. Matsui was the playermaker who masterminded a significant amount of the Stade des Alpes club’s success. He scored a brace and set up another.
Sylvain Marveaux (Stade Rennais): Left winger Marveaux has held off stiff competition from Hatem Ben Arfa to claim this berth, having been central to Rennes’ superb weekend success over Bordeaux. He struck after just three minutes to give his side the lead against les Girondins and then won the penalty that Jimmy Briand converted. Always a threat on the counter, the young attacking midfielder also had a hand in the third.
Attack
Kevin Gameiro (Lorient): Former Strasbourg striker Gameiro continues to turn in excellent performances on a weekly basis and will surely be on the radar of several big clubs come the summer transfer window. Scored his ninth goal of the season as les Merlus hammered Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 at the Parc des Princes and might have had more.
Danijel Ljuboja (Grenoble Foot38): Seemingly out of confidence before this weekend, Ljuboja put his recent poor performances behind him with an explosive showing against Auxerre. Struck the opening goal of the match after eight minutes to set his side en route to a 5-0 victory and was unrelenting in the pressure he applied to the visiting rearguard. Rennes’ Asamoah Gyan, who scored a stunning goal seconds after arriving as a substitute, was narrowly edged out for one of the striking roles.
