Coupe de la Ligue Round-Up: Olympique Lyonnais Suffer More Heartache, Marseille & Toulouse March On
Lyon seem set to go through another season without a trophy after Wednesday’s night defeat, though Marseille seem in good shape to quench their thirst for a long awaited trophy...

Lorient 1-0 Olympique Lyonnais
Guingamp 0-1 Toulouse
Olympique de Marseille 2-1 Lille
Lorient 1-0 Olympique Lyonnais
The pressure will continue to mount on Olympique Lyonnais general manager Claude Puel as his side’s last realistic chance of silverware was eradicated by Lorient.
It took only four minutes for the game’s decisive moment to arrive. Jonas Sakuwaha made good progress on the left, centring under heavy pressure from two defenders. Kevin Gameiro was alert to the possibilities, stealing in ahead of Dejan Lovren to nick a shot high into Remy Vercoutre’s net.
Lyon had the better of the remainder of the first half, though efforts from Lisandro Lopez and Michel Bastos failed to find the net, the former having an effort repulsed by Fabien Audard and the latter squirting a shot wide.
For much of the second half, the game didn’t stir. Lorient went closest when a lob from the active Gameiro touched the crossbar after a slight touch from Vercoutre. The last ten minutes, however, were explosive.
Gameiro twice had efforts saved by Vercoutre, but much of the action was at the opposite end of the field. Miralem Pjanic and Bastos both had sights of goal, but neither could find the target, allowing les Merlus to progress to the last four.
Guingamp 0-1 Toulouse
Albin Ebondo was Toulouse’s unlikely hero as the men from the Pink City progressed to the semi-finals of the Coupe de la Ligue at the expense of Guingamp.
Without the suspended Andre-Pierre Gignac, Toulouse went with youngster Kevin Dupuis in attack. He was immediately thrust into the action, but he could not beat Stephane Trevisan after being released. Ten minutes later, the same player pivoted inside the box and shot against the bar following good build up play from Franck Tabanou.
Dupuis continued to be active, though he was again out of luck as he escaped his marker before drawing another block from Trevisan.
Guingamp’s best effort of the match arrived ten minutes before the break, with Richard Soumah shooting just past the right post.
The game’s only goal arrived ten minutes after the restart. Colin Kazim-Richards, making his debut as a substitute, rolled a pass to Daniel Braaten, who in turn released Ebondo to rifle home.
Toulouse were thorough in their application for the remainder of the encounter, shutting their opponents out impressively.
Olympique de Marseille 2-1 Lille
Marseille continue to dream of their first silverware in over 15 years, claiming victory over Lille in the Coupe de la Ligue’s tie of the round.
LOSC grabbed the lead after only four minutes with a goal owing much to the speed of Eden Hazard, who burst down the right before crossing for Tulio de Melo to drill a low shot home.
Six minutes later the teams were all square. Mathieu Valbuena was the catalyst, centring for Lucho to restore parity almost instantly.
Steve Mandanda was soon called into action to deny Adil Rami, while Mickael Landreau would make a similarly impressive block from Mamadou Niang.
Hatem Ben Arfa had a fizzing shot from the corner of the box strike Landreau’s upright only moments after the break, before the match swung in the hosts’ favour when Yohan Cabaye was dismissed after picking up a second yellow card.
OM thought they had taken the lead with 13 minutes remaining, when an effort from Valbuena was headed away from the goal by Ludovic Obraniak, though the home team were sure the ball had crossed the line.
It didn’t take long for Didier Deschamps’ men to find the decisive goal. Valbuena, who was lively throughout, was the scorer, taking advantage of typically good work from Niang to strike.
There was to be drama in the last seconds, with Franck Beria’s effort crashing off the bar.
That effort proved to be Lille’s last gambit, leaving Marseille free to progress to the last four.
