Didier Deschamps Left Raging By Olympique de Marseille’s Auxerre Loss

Didier Deschamps (Olympique de Marseille coach)
Olympique de Marseille coach Didier Deschamps appeared to be in a state of shock when he spoke to the press after watching his side go down 2-0 to Auxerre at Stade Velodrome on Wednesday evening.

A brace of goals from Kenyan forward Dennis Oliech were decisive in a fixture in which OM offered very little offensive threat, leaving the Provence giants 11 points back of Ligue 1 leaders Girondins de Bordeaux.

“There was no match,” ‘DD’ scoffed to the AFP news agency after the game, clearly seething at his side’s performance. “It’s so big I’ve got trouble believing it. We were so absent.

“Uncontrolled matches we’ve played, but there...

“It’s hard to swallow. I feel royally for the fans who came out to watch tonight. We missed far too much to expect anything.”

Deschamps did try to scrape some excuses for his players, but they were hard to come by. “There were certainly rather difficult conditions,” he considered. “Feet were trembling and there was a handball from [Auxerre defender Jean-Pascal] Mignot [in the box] not whistled, but our choices were rather questionable.”

Regarding potential winter signings, the former Juventus coach was not overly optimistic. “The situation has not changed; we have no leeway,” he stated. “We’ll see what we can do to change the situation. The urgency is there, but that does not change the facts.”

Marseille have been linked with several names for the forthcoming transfer window, including Lorient forward Marama Vahirua and Nancy ace Youssouf Hadji. Most notably, Jimmy Briand has been associated with les Phoceens, but he is out of contract next summer, when OM are perhaps most likely to pounce.
