Claude Puel Denies Lyon Are Out Of The Ligue 1 Title Race
OL dropped more points at the weekend, but Puel remains confident his team can turn things around...
Olympique Lyonnais lost more ground in the chase for the Ligue 1 title when they drew 1-1 against Monaco on Sunday night. But general manager Claude Puel stated that there is still a possibility of his team overhauling leaders Girondins de Bordeaux come the end of the season.
Les Girondins claimed a 4-1 success over Lorient on Saturday, increasing their lead over les Gones, who are fourth, to a significant ten points. Second placed Olympique de Marseille are eight points off the pace set by Laurent Blanc’s side.
“Everything remains open,” Puel told Ligue 1’s official website after the game.
“It’s still up for grabs, even though there’s a big gap. Another championship starts after Christmas. We’ve got another game on Wednesday [against Montpellier] and we’ll have to dig deep. After that, during the break, we’ll recuperate, and get our injured players back.
OL have been on a disappointing run of late, and Puel was quick to acknowledge that his team are still at something of a low ebb.
“We’re still not calm and confident enough to keep our cool, regardless of what happens during a match. But we have to keep trying to play our game,” he indicated.
Michel Bastos’ stunning free kick handed OL the advantage in the principality, but a levelling goal from Park Chu-Young restored parity just before half-time. There would be no second half goals.
Lyon now have only two wins in their last ten games in all competitions.
