Grenoble Foot38 1-1 Nice
A chilly evening in south eastern France provided the back drop to another frustrating evening for Grenoble, who led against Nice but promptly surrendered their advantage.
After a slow start to the game, GF38 grew into proceedings and had the best of the early openings. Somewhat inevitably it would be Danijel Ljuboja who provided their major threat, missing a tremendous chance following a Laurent Courtios cross and then drawing a first rate block from David Ospina in the visiting goal as he attempted to strike home from inside the six-yard box.
Les Aiglons, who have been horribly out of form lately, responded with a couple of openings of their own, but an Anthony Mounier cross first proved inches too high before a separate attack saw the same player denied by a last gasp challenge.
Pierre Boya’s inability to turn the ball in with his head from close range provided a source of frustration just before the break, and Nicolas Dieuze would have an effort heroically blocked by a defender.
Nice enjoyed their best spell of the match in the early stages of the second half, Loic Remy drawing a great save from Ronan Le Crom and them bulleting a shot off the post.
The hosts would again fight back after a sluggish start, but they were unable to create the volume of chances they boasted in the first half. Nevertheless, they found an opening goal on 76 minutes. It was a well worked strike, with Yoric Ravet tucking a centre back across the face of goal for Dieuze to slide home.
Grenoble have frequently suffered late heartache this term, and Chaouki Ben Saada’s late effort would bring it on this occasion, the winger the benefactor of top class play from Anthony Mounier.
Montpellier 0-2 Nancy
After going unbeaten at home until Bordeaux visited on Wednesday, Montpellier have now lost back-to-back games at the Stade de la Mosson, with Nancy continuing their good form at the expense of Rene Girard’s side.
It would be something of a hit-and-run job, as la Paillade bossed much of the ball but lacked penetration, perhaps perturbed by the closed-door nature of the game. Much of their play went direct, and Nancy had few problems coping with such questions.
Two goals in quick succession just before the break pushed Pablo Correa’s men out of sight. Julien Feret’s pass to Issiar Dia instigated the first goal, with the latter then cutting a pass into the box for Djamel Bakar to profit from.
Feret directly set up the next goal, rolling a pass through for Pascal Berenguer to strike home calmly.
Montpellier again dominated possession after the break but were again disappointing in terms of chances. Instead it was Nancy who looked more threatening, with Dia denied by Geoffrey Jourdren. The goalkeeper required a little more luck on 75 minutes, when he saved a Bakar shot and then watched the former Monaco man place his rebound against the post. His efforts were ultimately in vain as no response from MHSC’s forwards proved forthcoming.
Stade Rennais 1-0 Paris Saint-Germain
One goal was all that was needed for Rennes to see of the challenge of PSG on Saturday evening, but the inconsistent Breton side could have had several more.
Although the hosts would dominate, les Parisien might have opened the scoring before the quarter hour mark, Mevlut Erding set free by Zoumana Camara, but the Turk’s drive cracked the post.
Rennes quickly asserted themselves on proceedings, with Ismael Bangoura pouncing on a horrible defensive error to shoot just past the top corner of Apoula Edel’s goal from the edge of the penalty box.
It would be Bangoura, the most active of the strikers on display, who would open the scoring six minutes before the break, complimenting Asamoah Gyan’s pass with a composed finish after being set free.
The same man shot wide and was then denied by Edel in the first 20 minutes of the second half, though it would be substitute Jimmy Briand who had the big chance to strike, denied brilliantly by the home goalkeeper after some superb solo work.
A late effort from Jean-Eudes Maurice summed up PSG’s night as his effort dribbled wide of target, typical of the home side’s shooting as they failed to test Nicolas Douchez once in a timid defeat.
Valenciennes 0-0 Racing Club de Lens
A surprisingly tame derby match saw only one yellow card and no goals as Valenciennes and Lens both ultimately settled for a stalemate on a bitterly cold evening.
Les Sang et Or would start the match smarter but would quickly be usurped by their hosts, who had the better chances to win a wholly disappointing fixture. Sebastien Roudet was thwarted by a tremendous piece of defending from Siaka Tiene, before the same forward saw Guy Ndy Assembe intercept well when Yohan Demont attempted to feed him a decisive cross.
Just prior to that, Vedran Runje in the visiting net was called into action, clawing away a dangerous header from Gregory Pujol, who would be denied a second time by the Croatian on 29 minutes.
The first half was played at an attractive pace, but openings were fewer after the interval. Johan Audel’s header nearly broke the deadlock, however, his radar was broken as he directed his effort past. A late effort from Gael Danic was designed as a match-winning effort as VA completed the match in the brighter fashion, but again Runje was well placed.
When finally the goalkeeper was beaten, by a Fahid Ben Khalfallah effort, no less, Demont was on hand to clear from the goal-line and ensure a scoreless draw.
