Marseille Coach Didier Deschamps Delighted To Finally Win Three Straight Games
OM are slowly starting to put together a winning run, and their good form is beginning to satisfy 'DD'...
Olympique de Marseille left it very late indeed to snatch three points against a Lorient side that were previously unbeaten at home in Ligue 1, but les Phoceens’ 2-1 success pleased head coach Didier Deschamps.
It seemed that circumstances were conspiring against the Provence giants when Marama Vahirua converted a penalty early in the second period to put the Bretons ahead, but OM fought back impressively, striking through debutant Jordan Ayew to level the scores and then claiming victory with a 92nd minute Souleymane Diawara goal.
“It’s good to win,” chirped ‘DD’ to the press after the encounter. “This is the first time we’ve connected three straight wins. It's also good to win late in games, it rewards the team.
“Lorient is never an easy field to win on.”
Deschamps, whose side have risen to second with this victory, continue to trail league leaders Girondins de Bordeaux by six points in Ligue 1. He is therefore well aware of the importance of the club’s forthcoming fixtures.
“We go to Saint-Etienne this weekend hoping that conditions allow us to play,” he stated. “These are hinging games, so to win here is important. Bordeaux are the favourites, [but] we’re hanging in there.”
Counterpart Christian Gourcuff, recently voted third best French coach of 2009 behind Laurent Blanc and Arsene Wenger, was clearly disappointed with the result, but he was far from despondent.
“Give me ten minutes to digest the result,” he said in the aftermath of the encounter. “It's a shame. Fortunately, the advantage in football is that there is a game after.”
Lorient, who are exceeding expectations in ninth, must travel to face les Girondins away from home on Saturday evening, a match that promises to be another thorough examination of their abilities.
