Laurent Blanc: Montpellier-Bordeaux Deserved To End As A Draw

Girondins de Bordeaux's trip to Montpellier may have ended with a 1-0 win for the visitors, but les Girondins’ head coach, Laurent Blanc, believes that Wednesday evening’s encounter at the Stade de la Mosson deserved to end all-square.

La Paillade bossed much of the game in the top of the table clash, but they could not find a way past Cedric Carrasso in the visiting goal. Victor Hugo Montano and Alberto Costa were particular nuisances to the Garrone club, but the closest the home side could come to a goal was a disallowed third minute strike from Colombian Montano. Bordeaux’s Yoann Gourcuff missed a first half penalty, but Jussie struck after the break to seal victory for the guests.

“The draw would have been fairer,” Blanc told the press after the game. “It would have been deserved for the Montpellier team, who played well in the game, however, one can’t say that Carrasso had many saves to make. We won a match by performing very poorly.

“If we had scored the penalty, we would probably have seen another game. When you win a game 1-0 and miss a penalty, this indicates that there is something in reserve.”

Blanc started his playing career with Montpellier, and he revealed the special feelings he had experienced in returning to the club.

“It is a pleasure to return to Montpellier and to see familiar faces,” he smiled. “When the stadium is full, it is beautiful. There was a great atmosphere.”

Home coach Rene Girard was full of praise, both for his team and for their opponents. “The players have managed a good game but they fell to a great team,” he asserted. “They did not deserve defeat in this match. They have nothing to be ashamed of in this defeat.”

Bordeaux have stretched their advantage in Ligue 1 to six points, with Olympique de Marseille usurping MHSC in second, though both of those sides have the opportunity to close the gap on les Girondins with their game in hand.
