Laurent Blanc will lead his Girondins de Bordeaux side into a special encounter against Montpellier on Wednesday evening.

Not only will the match at the Stade de la Mosson see Ligue 1’s top two clubs face off, it will also mark Blanc’s first return as a coach to the venue where his playing career began. He has admitted that it will be a unique experience.

“It was there where my story began,” he said. “The club has little in common with what I experienced when I started. The club has grown. I hope they will settle [in Ligue 1] permanently. I'm happy for them, for football and for the people who have put everything into the club so it can reaches this level.

"There is a new coach, and a choice of talented young players. Montpellier can rely on their training centre. They rely on their policies and have been rewarded.”

Les Girondins struck a fine blow on the road last Sunday, claiming a 1-0 victory over Olympique Lyonnais, but Blanc has remained cool over such success.

“To win away in Lyon is always good,” he mused. “We feared that game because we thought Lyon had the ability to rebound after some average results. What better way to bounce back than by beating a team who deprived them of the title?

“Did they have the weapons? That’s another question.

“Despite our victory, I maintain that Lyon are a candidate for the title.”

Bordeaux presently boast a four-point advantage over Montpellier in the Ligue 1 standings. They are eight clear of ninth-placed OL.
