Coupe de France: Lyon Paired With Ligue 2’s Strasbourg, Three All-Ligue 1 Affairs
There are a host of surprises possible in France's national cup competition, which is a tournament laced with shocks at the best of times...
The draw for the last 64 of the Coupe de France has not been favourable to France’s elite, with many Ligue 1 sides being paired away from home against lowly opposition.
One of the stand-out ties is Olympique Lyonnais’ trip to crisis-ridden Ligue 2 outfit Strasbourg, who have recently signed an agreement in principle for Jean-Pierre Papin to take over as their coach. The former French international forward, who led le Racing to Ligue 1 in 2006-07, has indicated that he will not take charge of the club if it is ruled that they cannot make winter signings, as seems a possibility at present.
Lyon are one of three top flight clubs paired against second tier opposition, with Monaco due to host in-form Tours and Stade Rennais forced to tackle runaway leaders Caen.
Of course, the three all-Ligue 1 ties will attract a great deal of interest. Bottom side Grenoble must host high-flying Montpellier, while Saint-Etienne and Le Mans host Lorient and Valenciennes respectively.
French champions Girondins de Bordeaux will host third-tier outfit Rodez, while Provence giants Olympique de Marseille go to fifth flight side Trelissac.
Strugglers Boulogne have been handed a banana skin. They will go to minnows Seclin, who play deep in the amateur ranks.
Reigning champions, Guingamp of Ligue 2, start their defence on the road to sixth division side Bonchamp-les-Laval.
