Claude Puel: Lyon’s Defeat To Bordeaux Is ‘Not Decisive’
OL may have been booed off the field at the weekend, but Puel remains stoical over his side's chances of claiming Le Championnat...
Olympique Lyonnais general manager Claude Puel has rejected claims that Sunday evening’s 1-0 loss to Ligue 1 leaders Girondins de Bordeaux has dealt a fatal blow to his club’s ambitions of regaining the title.
Les Gones were booed off the Stade Gerland field after succumbing to Laurent Blanc’s side over the weekend, with Marouane Chamakh netting the decisive goal for the visitors. As the scoreline suggests, it was a rather tight encounter with few goal scoring opportunities, and the OL fans were not happy about the lack of creativity from their side.
Though Puel freely admits that defeat was disappointing, he believes that his side can yet rally.
“It's a blow to lose at home to a direct rival,” he lamented to the press after the game, according to Ligue 1’s official website. “The eight-point gap to Bordeaux is not decisive yet, but we can't lose any more ground.
“Everyone is really disappointed, especially because we started the game well. However, the players are lacking confidence just now. We need to put this behind us and work really hard to climb the table again.
“You can't really blame the supporters for booing because the team is not performing at the level they expect.”
On Wednesday evening Lyon will have the opportunity to bounce back against Boulogne. With the northerners depleted by injury and already fighting a draining battle against the drop, Puel’s men will be clear favourites to record a simple home win.
