Didier Deschamps Hopes Mamadou Niang Can Return For Marseille In January
'DD' wants to see one of his top stars fighting fit for a crucial battle against Girondins de Bordeaux in the early part of 2010...
Olympique de Marseille head coach Didier Deschamps has indicated that he wants to see star forward Mamadou Niang back playing for les Phoceens by the middle of January.
Niang was injured in a collision with Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas in Tuesday evening's Champions League clash, tumbling awkwardly in the penalty box under a heavy challenge from the Spain No.1. The Senegalese star injured his shoulder as a result, and Deschamps has confirmed that the powerful attacker will be sidelined for over a month.
“We're going to lose [him for] between four and six weeks,” the coach told his club’s official website. “I hope it will be closer to four than six. Fortunately, [despite] this misfortune, there is a break, and the first game of 2010 is scheduled for January 10, then we have ten days without competition.”
Indeed, the coach has targeted January 20 as the date for Niang’s return – the very day that Marseille battle with title holders Girondins de Bordeaux, who are currently setting the pace once more in the league.
Asked if he may have signed any players by that time, Deschamps explained that there may be moves made in the January transfer market for a forward player.
Striker Brandao has been commended for his work rate but has been frequently lamented for his erratic finishing and it could be the former Shakhtar Donetsk forward who makes way in the January reshuffle.
