Olympique Lyonnais President Jean-Michel Aulas Defends Manager Claude Puel

Criticised by certain sections of the media and some fans, Puel can at least count on the support of Aulas for the time being...

Jean-Michel Aulas, chairman of Lyon
Ambitious Olympique Lyonnais president Jean-Michel Aulas, who is renowned for his burning desire to see his club lift the Champions League trophy, issued a vote of confidence to under-fire general manager Claude Puel after Wednesday night’s routine 4-0 success over Debrecen.

OL swept the Hungarian champions aside with ease, scoring goals through Bafetimbi Gomis, Michel Bastos, Miralem Pjanic and Aly Cissokho, though this was their first taste of success since the end of October. The ensuing period has been difficult for Puel and les Gones, with a series of draws and defeats taking the edge off their fine start to the campaign.

Aulas continues to stoically support the coach, indicating that even defeat on Sunday against league champions Girondins de Bordeaux would not sway his opinion.

“OL won 4-0 despite concerns about the team,” he mused to the press after Wednesday’s fixture. “There was a reaction. The players revolted and that’s the sign of a club qualifying for their seventh consecutive appearance in the last 16 [of the Champions League].

“This does not mean that we will beat Bordeaux, who are a very respectable team, like Lille [who defeated OL 4-3 last Sunday].

“If Bordeaux win against us, they will be eight points ahead. The match against Bordeaux becomes crucial.

“It is outrageous to question the work of 20 years and to question a high quality coach.”

Doubts were raised over Puel’s future as Lyon boss last summer after the club failed to retain their Ligue 1 title, which they had claimed in each of the previous seven seasons. Aulas was quick to defend his coach then, and he has been equally swift with his comments this time around.
