FORMATION 4-3-3
Goalkeeper
Jeremie Janot (Saint-Etienne): A real showman, Janot produced a first-rate performance on Saturday evening to help his struggling club to a scoreless draw against Sochaux. Left exposed by a defence bereft of many of its most recognisable faces, the one-club man had to be at his best on several occasions, but a great reflex save to deny Marvin Martin must rate as his best moment.
Defenders
Laurent Bonnart (Olympique de Marseille): Vital to OM’s 3-1 derby success over Nice at the weekend, Bonnart gave a performance of energy, intelligence and class from the right-back position. Swept in brilliantly to cover for his centre-backs on two occasions, denying Mamadou Bagayoko and Kafoumba Coulibaly with excellent tackles, and got forward to useful effect.
Milan Bisevac (Valenciennes): The rugged centre-back had missed the last couple of weeks due to injury but he returned with something of a bang on Saturday, aiding VA’s push to secure a 3-1 win over Monaco. Providing the team with security and assurance at the back, the 26-year-old’s sheer presence is of great benefit to his club.
Marc Planus (Girondins de Bordeaux): It was not to be a brilliant performance from Bordeaux against Paris Saint-Germain at the weekend, but it was nevertheless a solid showing. As ever, les Girondins looked calm under pressure from their opponents, and much of that was to do with Planus, who made several impressive challenges and urged his team-mates to maintain an intense pressing game.
Benoit Tremoulinas (Girondins de Bordeaux): It was not a vintage weekend for left-backs, who tended to struggle, but Tremoulinas provided useful service for Laurent Blanc’s men down the flank. Not his steadiest defensive showing, but his assist for Plasil would prove to be the match’s defining moment.
Midfielders
Jaroslav Plasil (Girondins de Bordeaux): Provided the key blow for Bordeaux in their victory over PSG at the weekend, towering impressively to head home from 12 yards out. But the Czech’s game was not simply at that one contribution; he was all over the park and was the chief protagonist for his side offensively, as well as one of their most energetic defenders.
Nicolas Dieuze (Grenoble Foot38): Finally Grenoble have won a Ligue 1 game this season, and it was midfielder Dieuze whose goal earned them maximum points. The former Toulouse man was on hand to strike after Danijel Ljuboja’s initial effort had been blocked. He also went close on a couple of other occasions.
Stephane Dalmat (Sochaux): In an inexperienced midfield unit, Dalmat’s presence was vital against Saint-Etienne. He single-handedly bossed the midfield using his physical presence, though he could not inspire his team to find a winning goal against les Verts. He did endeavour to give his best going forward, looking to be one of the most creative and inventive players on the field.
Attackers
Gervinho (Lille): The Ivorian ace has burst into life over the last couple of months, and he would arguably reach a new height in his club’s 4-3 victory over Lyon on Sunday night. Scored a brace of goals, including the stoppage time winner, and otherwise posed OL horrendous problems. Given something of a free role in the side, les Gones didn’t know where their bane was going to pop up next, and he was a pain all over the park.
Lisandro Lopez (Olympique Lyonnais): Continues to justify his massive price-tag, but those around him in the Lyon side do not appear to be at the same level. The Argentine ace scored a hat-trick on Sunday night – the first of the Ligue 1 season – but still ended up on the losing team. Now up to eight goals this season, his ascent of the scoring charts is unlikely to make up for the pain of defeat.
Karim Ait Fana (Montpellier): MHSC continue to be one of the great success stories of this season’s Ligue 1 campaign, and Ait Fana has arguably been one of the reasons why. At 20-years-old he was not expected to play a massive role in their efforts this term, but the France Under-21 international continues to impress when given the chance. A delicious cross set up Lilian Compan for the winning goal in La Paillade’s 2-1 success over Le Mans. He had already scored the first with a fine lob.
