Ligue 1 Round-Up: Bordeaux Go Four Points Clear As Rivals Stutter
For the first time this season there is clear water between Le Championnat’s leaders and the chasing pack. Bordeaux created this by edging Paris Saint-Germain at the weekend while nearest challengers Olympique Lyonnais and Auxerre both lost…

Montpellier 2-1 Le Mans
Minnow Montpellier continue to enjoy a tremendous start to their Ligue 1 lives, jumping back into the top two courtesy of a victory over strugglers Le Mans, who were the only side in the relegation zone not to win this weekend.
Opening the scoring in just the 12th minute was the home side’s Karim Ait Fana, who raced onto a pass from Mapou Yangambiwa before executing a superb lob into the visitors’ goal.
That was the way it stayed until the hour mark, by which time Mathieu Dossevi of the visitors had been dismissed for a nasty challenge on Cedric Jeunechamp. Nevertheless, Anthony Le Tallec squared the match up with a well-taken finish.
As has been the case with much of Le Mans’ season to date, things would slip just as they seemed to be going relatively well. With time starting to drift away, Ait Fana’s centre picked out Lilian Compan, who executed a fine diving header to seal the points for the hosts.
Nice 1-3 Olympique de Marseille
A derby of two halves saw Marseille edge closer to the summit of the table thanks to a win that was deserved, if a little unconvincing.
Didier Deschamps’ side enjoyed a perfect start to the match as Mamadou Niang fired them ahead from close range after great play from Lucho Gonzalez and Fabrice Abriel, who combined neatly down the left.
This was not to last, with the impressive Kafoumba Coulibaly cracking home a terrific strike from an awkward angle. With the momentum in Nice’s favour, a silly headbutt from Onyekatchi Apam on Gabriel Heinze saw the defender dismissed and left les Aiglons with the prospect of playing the second period on the back foot.
Though Nice would make a good fist at defending stoutly, they would be breeched on two occasions, Lucho slamming home the g-ahead-goal with the outside of his right boot after good work from Mathieu Valbuena. Bakari Kone completed the scoring just before full-time, scoring against his former employers with an impudent flick.
Stade Rennais 1-0 Lorient
Rennes claimed the honours in the Brittany derby, with an early goal enough to dismiss the challenge of Lorient.
Moussa Sow’s effort just three minutes into the game seemed to set up the encounter to be a cracker, but his rather scrambled strike following a corner proved to be the decisive factor in the game.
Virtually the entirety of the first period would be controlled by the hosts, who found Sylvain Marveaux to be especially inspiring. Despite his efforts, les Rouge et Noir could not be coxed to find a second goal.
Lorient really toiled to create clear goal scoring opportunities, and Rennes nearly added to their score in the dying minutes, with Marveaux cracking a free kick off the visiting side’s crossbar.
Saint-Etienne 0-0 Sochaux
It was a tale of two goalkeepers at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, as Saint-Etienne’s Jeremie Janot and Sochaux’s Teddy Richert both impressed greatly.
Though the hosts would boss more of the ball, it would be the visiting team who looked more incisive breaking forward for long periods of the game. Had they not come up against the in-form home goalkeeper, they would surely have claimed maximum points, as a magnificent block was all that prevented Marvin Martin’s 12-yard thump finding the net.
This was just one of a series of fine blocks from the home side’s custodian, though Richert would also enjoy a fine game at the opposite end of the field, notably denying Bakary Sako late in the second period.
A point doesn’t ease either side’s relegation worries, with both firmly rooted in the lower half of the standings.
Valenciennes 3-1 Monaco
Philippe Montanier’s Valenciennes side recaptured some of their best form as they defeated Monaco in the north of France on Saturday evening.
A whole series of chances would be created by VA in the first half of the game, though they were unable to take more than one. David Ducourtioux has proven to be a surprising source of goals this season, and he again found the net against Monaco, smashing home at the near post following good play from Johan Audel.
Les Monegasques offered little in the first half but showed a marked improvement earlier in the second period. This would be the spell in which they would find their equalising goal, Nene winning and converting a penalty.
Until the 84th minute a draw seemed on the cards, but Mamadou Samassa, the benefactor of a magnificent Audel cross, would ensure the three points stayed at the Stade Nungesser.
To rub salt into the visitors’ open wounds, Fahid Ben Khalfallah got a nice break of the ball before shooting home the third deep into stoppage time.
Girondins de Bordeaux 1-0 Paris Saint-Germain
There was arguably no bigger match in Ligue 1 this weekend than PSG’s trip west to Bordeaux, but the game turned out to be something of a damp squib, with few chances for either side.
The hosts monopolised the ball early on and would grab the lead midway through the first half, when Jaroslav Plasil converted following a superb cross from Benoit Tremoulinas.
That goal would be the outstanding highlight of a game that would otherwise not be especially memorable, especially for les Parisiens, who again looked largely impotent going forward. Substitute Jean-Eudes Maurice had the best chance of the game for the visitors, but he dragged a 37th minute opening past the post.
Bordeaux were not especially intent on adding to their lead, though Jussie might have added a second late on.
Auxerre 1-3 Nancy
Former leaders Auxerre dropped out of the top three after having been defeated by a Nancy team struggling for any real consistency.
AJA were lacking somewhat going forward, whereas their opponents looked more dynamic and somewhat fresher. The Lorraine club would indeed take the lead with their first attack of note, Chris Malonga’s corner picking out Andre Luiz, who found the target.
Much character has been shown by the Burgundy club this season, and that was again in evidence when they drew level soon after that set-back, Valter Birsa converting following another set piece.
Though the second period would see Auxerre become more of an attacking force, it would be Pablo Correa’s guests who would ultimately benefit. Abbes Ouaddou would draw ASNL ahead early in the second period, again taking advantage of a corner to score. And the matter was shut with only a few minutes remaining when Youssouf Hadji slammed home a third for the guests.
Bocundji Ca’s late red card had no impact on the game, though he will miss Nancy’s next fixture.
Boulogne-Sur-Mer 2-1 Racing Club de Lens
Any doubts about the character of Boulogne have been dispelled after a remarkable come-from-behind win against Lens on Sunday afternoon.
Things couldn’t really have started much worse for the injury-hit hosts, who lost Mame N’Diaye early on due to a second booking in the early moments of the encounter. And when Lens took the lead through a Bira Dembele own goal from a Sebastien Roudet free kick, it seemed inevitable that it was not to be USBCO’s evening.
The match would pivot on a remarkable six minute spell just prior to half-time, in which Boulogne would level and then move ahead. Ovidy Karuru would be the man to lead the assault, striking low into the net after strong play down the flank from Bakary Soumare.
One minute before the break a free kick from Alexandre Cuvillier would pose real problems from Romain Sartre, who put through his own net having been pressurised by Damien Perinelle.
Both sides had openings in the second half, with Boulogne better initially before Lens grew into the game, though neither would find the net again.
Grenoble Foot38 1-0 Toulouse
Nearly half way through the league campaign, Grenoble finally have their first victory, shocking Toulouse in the south east on Sunday afternoon.
For a change the home team got the rub of the green in the first half, with deflections falling their way and shooting chances for le Tefece largely restricted. In amongst their defensive chores, they were making a decent fist of going forward, though Olivier Blondel in the visiting net was not unduly troubled.
GF38 were the better side in the second period, when Toulouse would fade somewhat worryingly. Good play from Daisuke Matsui and Laurent Batlles saw them both go close, but the winning goal would not arrive until the final ten minutes, when Nicolas Dieuze smartly pounced on a rebound to send coach Mecha Bazdarevic home a happy man.
Though Toulouse were far from their best, Grenoble can be delighted with this success, extending their unbeaten run to four games.
